Sinners star Wunmi Mosaku Reflects on the Impact of the N-Word Incident at the Baftas
Wunmi Mosaku, the acclaimed actress from the film Sinners, shared her thoughts on the recent Bafta Awards controversy involving the use of the N-word. In an interview at the Actor Awards in Los Angeles, Mosaku expressed her distress and the lasting impact of the incident, which occurred during the Baftas ceremony on February 22nd.
Mosaku, who won the Best Supporting Actress Bafta, described the experience as deeply painful, stating, 'It was incredibly painful to have that celebration kind of really tainted for me.' The incident involved Tourette syndrome activist John Davidson shouting racial slurs, including the N-word, while Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage. The slur was audible during the BBC's broadcast, causing widespread outrage.
Despite her personal feelings, Mosaku emphasized her understanding of Davidson's condition and expressed her belief that the Bafta organization has much to learn from this experience. She highlighted the sense of vulnerability and lack of protection for individuals with conditions like Tourette's, as well as the broader audience.
The actress also addressed the BBC's handling of the situation, which she found particularly distressing. She questioned the decision to air the slur, stating, 'You really chose to keep that in. I can’t understand it. I can’t understand it and I’m not sure I can forgive it.' The BBC has since issued two apologies and announced a fast-track investigation into the incident.
